Training for medium milk producers in Poltava oblast
On April 22-23, 2019 a final training for medium farms that was the part of the series of trainings to ensure traceability and reduce the use of antibiotics in milk production was held in Poltava oblast.
The safety of raw milk must be confirmed in ways that are equivalent to European ones. Thus, Ukrainian milk producers as the market operators should also adhere to the key obligations set by the new food law: traceability and transparency. Concept of the pilot project "Control Program of Raw Milk" is based on these principles. For implementation pilot project software application "Dairy Module" has been developed (more details).

Training for medium milk producers in Vinnytsia oblast was held
On April 18-19, 2019, regular training was held for medium farms producing milk in the Vinnytsia oblast, where the Milk Safety Project works with dairy processors of LLC “Loostdorf” and LLC "Azorel".

1) Requirements of the new food law for milk producers;
2) Analysis of hazards in milk production and control at critical points: the importance of keeping records and ensuring traceability;

Training for medium milk producers in Mykolayiv oblast was held
On March 25-26, 2019 the Milk Safety Project in cooperation with dairy processors Public Joint-Stock Company “Bashtanka Cheese Plant” and PJSC “Pervomayskiy Milk and Canning Complex” in the Mykolaiv oblast gathered medium farms for regular trainings.

Training for medium milk producers in Kharkiv oblast
As part of Component 3 "Involvement of the private sector in the system of food safety control", on March 19-20, 2019, another training was held for the medium milk producers, which are suppliers of processors in Kharkiv oblast: JSC "Kupyansk Milk Canning Plant" and LLC "S-Trans".
The objectives of two-day trainings were:
- raising awareness of hazards in the production of milk and critical points on the farm;
- A clear understanding of the principles of HACCP (system of analysis of hazards and control at critical points);
- The importance of applying best management farming practices and ensuring the health and welfare of animals with a focus on reducing the use of antibiotics.

Oblast meeting regarding the control program of raw milk in the Kharkiv oblast was held
On March 18, 2019, a regular oblast meeting on the launch of the pilot project "Control Program of Raw Milk" took place.
The event was attended by about 70 participants: milk producers and processors, specialists from the Main Directorate of the SSFSCP in Kharkiv oblast, oblast and rayon inspectors, representatives of the Kharkiv Regional State Laboratory of the SSFSCP.
The Head of the Milk Safety Project Igor Kravchenko informed the participants about the work done within the framework of the project. Oblast meetings on the implementation of the pilot project were launched
On March 6, 2019, the oblast meeting was held in Mykolayiv to launch the pilot project "Control Program of Raw Milk ". The purpose of the event was to inform potential participants of the pilot project on the peculiarities of the implementation of the control program of raw milk in the Mykolayiv oblast, the importance of a transparent and traceable system for monitoring the quality and safety of raw milk. This regional meeting in the Mykolaiv oblast started a series of similar events, which the SSFSCP together with its territorial bodies in cooperation with the Milk Safety Project plan to organize also in Vinnitsa, Poltava and Kharkiv oblasts.

Training on milk quality data management for milk processors was held
In the framework of Component 3, "Involving the Private Sector in the Food Safety Control System," a training on milk quality data management on the topic "Review of Milk Monitoring Protocols" was held on February, 27-28. The purpose of the training was to raise awareness of the importance of introducing a routine, reliable system for analysing raw milk at the level of the tank cooler (farm or milk collection point), identifying areas for improving laboratory analysis, data analysis, interpretation of results and communication with suppliers. So, the training was attended by 18 milk processors representatives.
The key trainer was Sarah Robbiani, Quality Director of one of the largest cooperatives in Switzerland - Mooh Genossenschaft. During first theoretical day she shared her experience of introducing raw milk control at the level of the first buyer and dairy processor.

Control of the quality and safety of raw milk: the experience of Ukraine and Switzerland
On February 26, 2019, the awareness workshop on "Raw milk quality and safety control: framework for traceability and transparency" was held. A series of trainings on epidemiological surveillance of animal health has been completed
On January 29-31, 2019, a training on methods of risk assessment and epidemiological surveillance of animal health was held within the framework of the Milk Safety Project for the specialists of the SSFSCP.
The first part of the training was devoted to the finalization of the risk assessment of the probability of the LSD virus introduction in Ukraine. During the second part of the training, international expert Marco Di Nardi introduced the advance concept of risk based animal health surveillance. In the working groups, the participants continued to work on the EPI Design tool needed for epidemiological surveillance. An international expert, Isabel Lechner, during a teleconference, presented the sensitivity of the surveillance strategy and how to evaluate it. The second round of e-learning course for specialists of ssfscp on the use of best practices for the production of safe milk has finished
The e-learning course on "The Importance of Using Best Practices for Production of Safe Milk and Dairy Products", which lasted from December 3, 2018 to January 21, 2019, has been completed. The training was attended by 443 state inspectors, state veterinary inspectors and other specialists of the SSFSCP in the Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Zakarpattia, Zaporizhzhya, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Kirovograd, Luhansk, Lviv, Odessa, Rivne, Sumy, Ternopil, Kherson, Khmelnytsky, Cherkassy, ​​Chernivtsi, Chernihiv oblasts and Kiev city.
According to the results of the final testing, 424 participants have received the certificates.

Milk safety project continues training in risk assessment
On 18-20 December 2018 the technical workshop for the representatives of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection on the main principles of risk assessment, value chain analysis, economic analysis in animal and human health and food safety took place.
The main aim of the workshop was to update the participants’ knowledge about OIE concept of risk assessment, to get acquainted with the methodology of elicitation, finalize the risk pathways and start risk assessment of probability of penetration and spread of FMD virus in Ukraine.

From October, 29th to December 10th, 2018, State Inspectors and State Veterinary Inspectors of the Main Departments of the SSFSCP in Vinnitsa, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Poltava and Kharkiv oblasts passed a course on "The Importance of Using Best Practices for the Production of Safe Milk and Dairy Products" on the basis of the Electronic Distance Learning System "Moodle". Training for small-scale milk producers in Kharkiv oblast
On 9 December 2018 in Rzhavchyk village, Pervomaisk rayon, Kharkiv oblast, the training for small-scale milk producers took place in cooperation with the partner dairy processing enterprise S-Trans LLC.
The key training topics included hygienic requirements to milking and milk collection, detecting subclinical mastitis as well as proper feeding for higher milk quality and yield.
Some participants for the first time learnt what somatic cells are and why a milk producer should know their count. The participants also got acquainted with a simple and quick technique of detecting latent forms of mastitis and received a present from the Project – a set for qualitative evaluation of SCC in milk.

On October 16 - 19, 2018 the Milk Safety Project conducted the training for inspectors of the Main Directorate of the SSFSCP in Vinnytsia oblast. The main goal of the training is to gain the understanding of importance applying the best practices in milk production and to raise awareness about the changes in the food safety control system.

Training on the best practices of milk production was held in Poltava oblast
On September 4-5, 2018, the Milk Safety Project conducted a two-day training program for milk suppliers from dairy processors in the Poltava oblast. The largest training group has united over 80 participants. Representatives of agricultural and dairy enterprises studied jointly with the SSFSCP experts about the best practices of animals keeping, animals’ welfare and health of the udder, milk hygiene, cooling and storage of milk, as well as new approaches to inspection for the purposes of state control. Training for medium milk producers in Mykolaiv oblast
Milk processing companies-partners of the Milk Safety Project in the Mykolaiv oblast, “Bashtanka Cheese Plant” and “Pervomaisky MCP” gathered their milk suppliers in Mykolaiv on August, 1-2, to participate in the training on best milk production practices.

On July 31, training for transporters and employees of milk collection points (MCP) was held on the basis of the dairy processing company-partner of the "Bashtansky Cheese Plant", which became the point for raising awareness among its milk suppliers.

Training on the principles of the epidemiological and risk-based surveillance on animal health was held
Within the framework of the Milk Safety Project the training on epidemiological surveillance on animal health and a seminar on risk-based surveillance took place on July 10-12, 2018. On July 10-11, 2018, a two-day training for milk suppliers of milk processor – Project’s partner LLC Loostdorf took place. Milk safety project continues to conduct trainings on risk assessment
On June 19-21, 2018, a technical seminar on the main principles of risk assessment in the area of ​​animal and human health and food safety was held to prepare representatives of the SSFSCP.

Continuing consulting process on the milk control program implementation
On 14-15 May, a second consultative workshop on the implementation of the pilot milk control program in Ukraine was organized by the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project in cooperation with the Directorate of Food Safety and Quality of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, the central body of the SSFSCP, milk producers and processors, industry associations and state laboratories of the SSFSCP in the pilot oblasts (Vinnytsia, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Mykolaiv).

The trainings for small milk producers in the Mykolaiv oblast were conducted
The Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety project continues a series of trainings on the production of safe and high-quality milk for small-scale producers in pilot oblasts.
Thus, on the 16th of April, 2018 the training was held for small milk producers in the Kryve Ozero village in cooperation with PJSC "Pervomaysky MCC" and with the assistance of the Rayon State Administration in Kryve Ozero. The Milk Safety Project aims to more actively involve milk processors in training and advisory activities for milk suppliers.     On March 15-16, the first consultative workshop on the implementation of the pilot state control program of raw milk was conducted in Kiev and organized by the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety project.     The Trainings for Small-scale Milk Producers Were Held in Vinnitsa Oblast
    On February 27-28, 2018 Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project conducted the training on the production of safe and high-quality milk for small-scale producers in the village of Samgorodok and Kordyzivka Kozyatynsky rayon Vinnytsia oblast.     The Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project organized the next training for milk transporters and milk collection point employees in the framework of cooperation with Milk Collection Point in Prushynka village, Kozyatyn district, Vinnytsya oblast.     Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project held the next training for medium-sized milk producers in Vinnytsya oblast
    On 17-18 October 2017 in the framework of Component 3 “Involving the private sector into food safety control system” the training for medium-sized milk producers was held in Vinnytsya oblast. About 50 managers, livestock specialists, and veterinarians of agricultural enterprises and farms which supply raw milk to LLC “Loostdorf” as well as representatives of the commercial dairy farm of LLC “Azorel” participated in the two-day training. The Project cooperates with both milk processing enterprises in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding. The aim of the training was to have clear understanding of importance to use best practices of milk production, livestock feeding and management, and milking hygiene to improve raw milk quality and safety.

    The Milk Safety Project conducted the training of trainers for milk processors – project’s partners
    On August 29-31, the Milk Safety Project gathered the representatives of dairy processors within the framework of the activity “Training of Trainers” of the Component 3. The main goal of the event was to formulate a clear understanding of the basic concepts in the following areas: feeding and management of the herd, breeding and genetics, as well as milking hygiene in the context of the impact on the safety, quality and quantity of milk.

    The Milk Safety Project conducted a training on milk quality data for dairy processors
    In the framework of component 3 of the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project the first training on milk quality data for dairy processors was held on July 12-13, 2017. The goal of the training is to assess the impact of the quality of raw milk on its processing and the products quality. High somatic cells count, total bacterial count, antibiotic residues, low protein and fat content, and milk falsification have become key criteria for cost-benefit analysis by dairy processing companies.

    In the framework of the second component of the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project on the May, 17-19, 2017 SSFSCP’s specialists from the pilot oblasts (Poltava, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Mykolayiv) and specialists of the Main Directorate of SSFSCP in Kyiv oblast and the central office took part in the second module of training of trainers.     SWISS-UKRAINIAN PROJECT DEVELOPED THE FLYER ABOUT LUMPY SKIN DISEASE
    Considering the unfavorable epizootic situation regarding Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in neighboring countries and the insects occurrence because of warm season, the risk of LSD in Ukraine has risen sharply. To increase awareness of the cattle owners about this disease and to prevent its spread State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection initiated the development of an information flyer on LSD and Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project produced it. National and international experts were involved into flyer development. 30,000 copies were published and distributed to the cattle owners by territorial bodies of SSFSCP.
    The LSD causes large economic losses due to the significant reduction in the milk and meat production and the reduc tion in the quality of raw hides. Mortality from LSD in cattle is about 10%.     SWISS-UKRAINIAN MILK SAFETY PROJECT TOGETHER WITH PYRIATYN CHEESE PLANT BEGAN CONSULTATIVE PROGRAM FOR MILK PRODUCERS
    On the 21st and 22nd of March 2017 the trainings were held for small-scale milk producers in Berezova Rudka village of Pyriatyn rayon and in Kurinka village of Chornuhynskyi rayon Poltava oblast.     On the 16th of March the experts of Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project met with small-scale milk producers in Kryve Ozero village in Mykolaiv oblast in the framework of trainings on the importance of best practices in the production of safe and qualitative milk.     Milk Safety Project Held the Round Table on Drugs Residues in Milk
    On the 14th of March the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project conducted the All-Ukrainian round table “Control’s problem of the presence of drugs residues and other inhibitors in milk”. The meeting was attainted by 14 dairy processors-partners of the project, industry leaders, SAFOSO Director Manon Schuppers and moderator Marc Gramberger.

    Milk Safety Project Conducted the Training for Risk Assessment Team
    Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held the third training for the risk assessment team on epidemiological surveillance on animal health based on risk assessment. The participants improved their knowledge in epidemiology, including the determination of the diseases spread measures and the development of crosssectional epidemiological study.

    Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project Conducted the Third Training for Dairy Processors
    On the 20-th of February, Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project for the third time gathered future trainers from milk processors-partners from the pilot oblasts for the three-day training in Kiev.
    The main purpose of the meeting is to identify critical problems, decisions, key messages and ways of presentation the technical topics for future training for transporters and personnel of milk collection points (MCP) regarding the importance of establishing a cool chain with high standards of hygiene on the farm / MCP to dairy companies.     The trainings for small-scale milk producers were held in the Kharkiv oblast
    On February, 15-16, 2017 trainings for small milk producers were conducted in the village Zakutnivka and Zmiiv town in Kharkiv oblast. This time, the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project in collaboration with the dairy processor "C-Trans" gathered over 80 people from 9 villages to familiarize with best practices of production safety and quality milk. Such high attendance was reached thanks to professional work of milk collection coordinators of "C-Trans" and future trainers from Project’s partner.     On February 8, 2017, the experts of Milk Safety Project conducted the training for small milk producers in Mykolaiv oblast on the importance of best practices implementation in the production of safe and qualitative milk.     Milk Safety Project conducted the training for small scale producers in Vinnytsia oblast
    On January, 24-25, 2017 Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held the training on safety and quality milk production for small scale milk producers in villages Kordyshivka and Samhorodok Koziatyn region Vinnytsia oblast. The key topics of these events were: proper milking technique, identification of clinical and subclinical mastitis, correct use of antibiotics, compliance with withdrawal period and the importance of keeping records. There were 70 participants in two trainings. Some producers of neighboring villages and workers of milk collection point from the Prushanka village joined the trainings.

    On December, 20-22, 2016 the training of trainers (ToT) to raise awareness of the importance of applying the best practices of the safe milk production was conducted in the framework of Milk Safety Project.

    On 17-18th of November the first international conference on risk-based milk safety control systems took place.     On the 31th of October in the framework of Milk Safety Project the second meeting of the working group on the list of questions (checklists) and technical guidelines for the inspection was held.     On October, 25-27, 2016 Milk Safety Project conducted technical workshop to train representatives of public authorities on key principles of risk assessment, value chain analysis, economic analysis in animal and human health and food safety.

    Milk Safety Project conducted laboratories assessment
    On September, 19-23 the experts of Milk Safety Project assessed the work and effectiveness of the national laboratories network in Poltava, Vinnitsa, Mykolayiv and Kharkiv oblasts that are involved in analyzing quality and safety of the raw milk.
    This mission will help to assess and analyze the performance of basic research of raw milk, the measures of internal and external quality assurance of laboratories, and to identify training topics that will be discussed and covered in future trainings. The assesment will define the needs in laboratory equipment, which project plans to purchase for the laboratories in future.

    "Trainings of trainers" for milk processors are launched
    On September, 12 - 16 in Kiev the first training of future trainers was conducted. The representatives of the dairy processing companies that were selected to participate in the project from Mykolaiv, Vinnitsa, Poltava and Kharkiv oblasts took place in the trainning. In total, the training was attended by 19 participants from 10 companies, which were divided into two groups. The main objectives of the training - to familiarize participants with the concept of "training of trainer", to identify critical problems for small milk producers, to develop solutions and delivery methods.     Working visit in Mykolayiv oblast
    On August, 18-19, 2016 the project team together with Assistant Director of Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine Viktor Shutkevych visited the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Mykolaiv oblast, Regional State Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine and dairy processor "Lactalis" and its suppliers of raw milk: milk collection point and dairy farm.

    The Awareness Workshop for Milk Processors Took Place
    On August, 16-17, 2016 Milk Safety Project organized the awareness workshop for milk processors that were selected to participate in the project. The event was attended by 15 participants from 10 dairy enterprises in Ukraine.

    On August 15, 2016 the joint meeting of working groups of the two components of the project: "Institutional reform" and "Private Sector" was held.     On June 1, 2016 in Kiev the meeting of risk assessment team was held.     The project team conducted a working visit to the organic milk production
    On the May 19, 2016 the experts of the Swiss-Ukrainian project on milk safety together with the international expert Jorge Pinto Ferreira and project manager Igor Kravchenko visited the dairy plant PJSC "EtnoProdukt" and its own dairy farm.
    The main purpose of the working visit to the plant "EtnoProdukt" (villiage Velyka Oleksandrivka, Kyiv oblast) is aimed at acquaintance with the features of organic dairy production in Ukraine. The control system on milk quality and safety at all stages of the dairy value chain was presented to project’s experts: begin with raw milk receiving, it processing and end with finished products storage and products selling.
